isthmus
poem
each alone
βyou βand βi
we are surrounded
βby the teeming sea
ββof we
face after face
βsmiling
ββscowling
stormy looks
what connects me to you
βis only this thin strip
where our surfaces touch
βpulling me into you
ββdo i matter?
ββdo you care?
is this moment only because
βneither you nor i want
ββto be islands?
ββwhat does it mean to love?
ββdo i need to no longer be me?
when the tides rise to hide
ββthe isthmus that connects
ββββββus
will you return to me?
ββwhat does it mean?
ββwhat does it matter?
why do we care at all?
Authorβs Note:
a poem from exploring the nature of iβ(sthm)βus

A lot for reflection in this piece. Thank you.
The isthmus metaphor stayed with me. The poem feels caught between individuality and belonging, asking whether connection is something we choose, something we need, or something that exists beneath the tides whether we can see it or not. Thank you for sharing this.
