What stayed with me most was that final word: β€œunwashed.” As if washing away that scent would also mean losing the last presence of someone who is no longer there.

Yes. That final word also contains a lovely ambiguity. What is actually unwashed here? The memory? The poem? The speaker? The lover? The hurt?

Unwashed can mean dirty. But also the unfiltered truth.
